Máiréad + Andrew – A New Years Wedding

Máiréad and Andrew’s wedding was the perfect end to my 2010 wedding season – complete with sparklers and confetti guns!
I had the unique opportunity to capture Andrew’s actual wedding proposal earlier in the year, so it was so cool to finish off the season with their wedding celebration. Máiréad was a member of the Norman Flynn Design team who helped create a breathtaking showroom for the King’s Wharf development, and with the help of the super talented Avril Mulholland of Update Events, this space was transformed into the perfect setting for their New Year’s eve wedding. And in typical style, we stayed until the very end as there were so many fun moments and incredible details that we did not want to miss – plus we had a blast celebrating the first few hours of 2011 with a spirited family full of love and life.

Westward Bound

A very cloudy Halifax day broke up just in time for Brett & Andrew’s wedding at the St. Mary’s Boat Club. As only Avril Mulholland of Update Events can do, each and every wedding detail was perfectly planned and reflected Brett & Andrew’s style. The St. Mary’s Boat Club was transformed into a hip, contemporary feel for the night and the Mellotones definitely knew how to keep everyone on their feet in the fun, upbeat atmosphere. I saw lots of great moments throughout the night and I really enjoyed learning more about Brett and Andrew while capturing the day. It was also a perfect send-off for the couple as they will soon be leaving the Maritimes to start off their new life together. Best of luck in Calgary!

A Splash of Salsa … Heather + Tarek Engagement

Given the weather we have been having lately, it’s a good thing Heather and Tarek decided to stay indoors for a little salsa dancing at Havana Nights. Considering the fact that Salsa is the dance of passion, it was a perfect setting for their engagement shoot … and for someone with two left feet and no rhythm, watching these two move around the dance floor was like watching an episode of Dancing with the Stars – not that I’ve watched it.

Rebecca + Clayton Engagement

For their engagement shoot, Rebecca and Clayton decided to first meet for a celebratory drink and capture a few special moments at the Old Triangle in downtown Halifax. After fishing out Rebecca’s engagement ring from a pint of beer, we left the city and hit the beach, braving an especially windy, not quite spring like day. I’m pretty sure there were a few people who thought we were nuts, but we had a lot of fun with it …

When I first met with Rebecca and Clayton about photographing their wedding, we immediately clicked. They are basically as much fun as a couple can get, the kind of couple that you want to hang out with every weekend and I can’t wait for their wedding this coming September in Halifax.

Sheila & Ross – Pier 21 Wedding

Coming from Ontario, Sheila and Ross wanted their wedding guests to celebrate in true Maritime fashion. Their wedding was set at Pier 21, located along the historic Halifax Waterfront and the perfect venue for a party that was full of Maritime spirit …

Guests more than lived it up on the dance floor and I don’t think the bride and groom sat down once the entire evening. We had an incredibly fun day surrounded by a hilarious cast of characters, all celebrating Sheila and Ross. I could tell more stories about their day, but I think the photos speak for themselves …

Cheers to the newlyweds (or should I say, “SOCIABLE!”).

Destination Downtown

A Destroyer Engagement Shoot

A few weeks before our engagement shoot, Meaghan wrote me an email that read – “Rick got word back today that we are free to use the Athabaskan for pictures … they sail on November 1st so we are good til then.” My jaw dropped. I mean it’s not every day that you have full access to shoot in and around an Iroquois-class destroyer that has served the Canadian Forces since 1972 (a big thanks to the entire crew of the Athabaskan – and safe travels). As for Meaghan and Rick, a destination wedding in Mexico awaits these lovebirds …

An Engagement Date

My wife and I always joke about how there are so many options in Halifax for dinner & drinks, yet we always end up on Argyle Street (usually at the Economy Shoe Shop) where we know we are guarenteed great atmosphere, good beer and a fun night out. Jenn and I recently tagged along with Mindy and Colin for their engagement date night. We met at the studio and, without having any real plan, strolled around Halifax and, of course, ended up on Argyle Street. So I guess you could say it was the closest I’ve come to a date night in a long time! (sorry Sus, I promise wedding season is almost over and we’ll be having a lot of date nights to make up for it!). We had a great time with this fun-loving couple … Mindy has a great laugh, contagious smile and Colin is really easy-going, so hanging out with them was really the next best thing to a real date night. See you on Labor Day week-end (2011) for the big day!

The BIO Engagement Shoot

I took my daughter to a different park the other day and rather than sprinting off as she normally would, she stood there, frozen in her tracks with a giant smile stretching ear to ear. After a minute or two, she just took off running. I think that the look she gave me said it all – her busy mind simply didn’t know where to start. So what does this have to do with an engagement shoot? When Jenn and I met up with Vince and Jessica at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO), the exact same thing happened to me. I just stood there looking at this amazing setting and I was seriously overwhelmed. From the old junkyard to an incredible evening sky over Halifax, I simply needed a second to take it all in before shooting a single frame. And of course once I started, it was near impossible for me to stop. In fact if it wasn’t for my batteries dying, I’m pretty sure that Jenn would have had to wrestle the camera out of my hands. What made this location absolutely perfect was that Vince and Jessica met on the CCGS Hudson which happened to be docked the day of our shoot. A big thank you to the BIO and CCGS Hudson crew that allowed us access to the place where it all began for Vince and Jess.

A Rainy Day Engagement Shoot

Jennifer & Hans aren’t afraid of a little rain. The forecasters promised heavy rain but Jennifer went ahead and got her hair and make-up done up in style by the awesome Alicia Melanson. After she pampered herself a little, they grabbed an umbrella and Jenn and I followed this “up-for-anything” couple along the puddle-lined streets of Halifax (and one very cool garage). I always find it amusing when a client tells me that they’re “shy in front of the camera”, but end up rocking their shoot and being so great to work with. We had fun getting to know each other and will definitely have a fantastic day next summer when Jenn and I capture their “I dos”…rain or shine!

This next image was the very first shot of our session … I guess this was his way of pointing out the couple (!?)
